In order to take your audience by surprise, you need a unique, surprising, and clever approach to problem solving. Need to find that smart, unique solution to a project? A general rule I have is to throw out my first 5 to 8 ideas.
I tend to think that these first few tries are going to be the same easy solutions everyone else would come up with when presented with the same challenge. Only after I get those first 5 to 8 ideas out of my system do I truly even begin to gain the insight to start coming up with unique and interesting ways to solve a problem.
